The CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation’s flagship event, the Cachou Tournament, held every spring, is attended by some 250 generous golfers from the business community. This prestigious one-of-a-kind tournament engages a community to demonstrate its commitment and to help the CHU Sainte-Justine remain a world leader in mother and child health care.

Because on the golf course, just like in a child’s journey through care, every player makes a difference.

39 years of success

Since 1987, nearly $25M has been raised thanks to the Cachou Tournament. Over the years, it has had a major impact, helping the CHU Sainte-Justine develop the next generation of professionals, step up the pace of research and implement new technologies.

Thanks to its partners, donors, golfers and volunteers, the Cachou Tournament has offered, and continues to offer, the professionals at our hospital the opportunity to set their sights higher and surpass themselves for the health of Quebec children and families.

Your foursome can change the future of their foursome

Mia was barely three years old when her parents noticed her bumping into the walls and furniture at night, as if she had trouble seeing in the dark. The specialists at Sainte-Justine’s ophthalmology clinic suspected she might have retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative genetic disorder that leads to blindness.

Through a clinical trial that Mia is participating in, the genetics team at Sainte-Justine has confirmed this hypothesis and identified the responsible gene. Unfortunately, they also found that two of her three brothers — Léo and Colin — have the same condition. If no treatment is found, all three will gradually lose their sight over the course of their lives.

In 2022, their parents decided to look beyond the diagnosis and take the family on a 15-month trip around the world to fill their children’s visual memory before it was too late.

The teams at Sainte-Justine are also committed to looking beyond today and toward the future in order to find ways to address medical conditions once thought untreatable. Advances in gene therapy are a new source of hope for people with retinitis pigmentosa: one day, it may even be possible to replace a defective gene with a functional one and stop the progress of the disease.
